World Food  or World Hunger Day  (16 October)

16 October is officially known as World Food Day because it marks the anniversary of the founding of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in 1945. Each year, countries around the world observe this day to talk about food security and the right to food. The FAO consistently reminds governments that the Right to Food is a universal human right, not a privilege. Yet, despite these yearly reminders, growing numbers of poor and working-class people continue to go hungry, facing the indignity of begging for food, joining soup kitchens, or going without entirely.

Behind the Youth Revolt

The number of mostly spontaneous mass protests in Africa has grown exponentially since the start of the 2010s and yet, it still has not registered in many decisionmakers’ minds that a sea change is afoot in our political economy. Africa has the youngest population in the world. A rapid acceleration of quality service delivery is required to make Africans unite behind some kind of social contract and yet, nowhere is there any sign of the urgency that is required. This explains the growing anger that wee see in the population.
