Zabalaza for Socialism (ZASO) expresses its support and solidarity with the workers of the Parktonian Hotel in Braamfontein and with the Food and Allied Workers Union (FAWU), and its Federation SAFTU under whose leadership this strikeis being conducted. 

The strike follows the employer’s refusal to reverse a series of unilateral changes to workers’ terms and conditions of employment, including the withdrawal of benefits, non-payment of agreed salary adjustments, delayed salaries, the conversion of workers from monthly salaries to hourly rates, and the imposition of short-time work without consultation. These actions represent a serious attack on collective bargaining and decent work.

At a time when millions of working-class households are struggling with rising living costs and unemployment, workers cannot be expected to bear the burden of capital’s unilateral decisions. Collective bargaining is a hard-won right, and the right to strike is a fundamental constitutional protection when the bosses refuse to negotiate in good faith.

ZASO fully supports FAWU’s call on the labour movement, progressive organisations and the broader public to boycott the Parktonian Hotel until the employer resolves the dispute through genuine collective bargaining. Every organisation that stands with these workers strengthens the struggle to defend workers’ rights and dignity.

We call on Parktonian Hotel management to immediately reverse the unilateral changes, honour its obligations to workers, and guarantee decent work at a living wage.
